Spring back to Health...

Practioner : Laura Robertson Lic. Ac. M.B. Ac. C

Acupuncture is a medical technique used to treat a wide variety of conditions.

What is Acupuncture.?

Acupuncture is a medical technique used to treat a wide variety of conditions. During the past few years, acupuncture has become increasingly popular. Whilst it is exciting that the range of medical treatments available is widening, it does mean that the responsible practitioner of acupuncture has a duty to educate both other medical colleagues and the general public about the strengths and weaknesses of the technique.

Very large claims have been made for acupuncture in the past. Not all of them can be substantiated. Such claims are worrying to the responsible practitioner because they tend to confuse rather than enlighten. They can also alienate many people - doctors among them who might otherwise be sympathetic to the view that acupuncture can, in some cases, be an effective method of treatment.

The British Medical Acupuncture Society is a nationwide group of family doctors and hospital specialists who practise acupuncture alongside more conventional techniques. The BMAS believes that acupuncture has an important role to play in health care today, and that it is vital to put forward a balanced case in order that informed opinion can encourage its use.

What can Acupuncture Treat?

Some common conditions that often repsond well to acupuncture.

  • Pain anywhere, including neck and back problems, sciatica, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, tenosynovitis, chtonic strains. Local pains in the hand or foot can benefit considerably. Osteoarthritis ("wear-and-tear" arthritis) is generally helped, especially in the hip and knee, and surgery can sometimes be avoided.

  • Headaches and migraine.

  • Stress, anxiety, depression and sleep problems.

  • Bowel conditions, including the Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS), and chronic diarrhea or constipation.

  • Skin irritations, including eczema and urticaria.

  • Asthma, allergic rhinitis (including hay fever, especially as a preventive before the season starts) and sinus problems. Sore, dry.or itchy eyes, and eyelid irritations.

  • Gynaecological problems, such as erratic or painful periods, Premenstrual Syndrome (including PMT), menopausal symptoms, and also sickness of pregnancy.

  • There are, besides these, many other disorders and symptoms that can be helped by acupuncture. In general, if you have a troublesome or persistent problem then consider acupuncture...

Acupuncture can be combined with Western medication, and it is particularly effective in combination with other forms of 'physical' treatment, such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy.
